Our Governors

Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to play in raising academy standards. The role of the governing body is absolutely key to the effectiveness of a school. Time and time again OfSTED has noted that the most effective schools demonstrate effective leadership and management – including by a governing body.

Strategic Leadership

School Governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the Headteacher and then work with the Headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.

Each individual Governor is a member of a governing body, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual Governors may not act independently of the rest of the Governing Body; decisions are the joint responsibility of the Governing Body.

The role of the Governing Body is a strategic one. Its key functions are to:

work with the Headteacher to set the aims and objectives for the school;
set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives;
set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives;
monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives;
be a source of challenge and support to the Headteacher as a critical friend.

The Governing Body at St. Philip Neri with St. Bede has been delegated responsibilities from the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Academy Trust and work in partnership with the other schools in the Trust and its Board of Directors.

Welcome from the Chair of the Local Governing Body

On behalf of the Governing Body of St. Philip Neri with St. Bede, welcome to our school webpage.

In September 2018, I was appointed Chair of Governors and it is a privilege for me to take up this appointment, having served on the Governing Board for several years.

Prior to being appointed as a Foundation Governor, I had been helping in the school for 3 years as a reading volunteer. I quickly became aware of what a welcoming and inclusive school it is, with a Leadership Team, teachers and support staff who provide a very caring ethos, a safe learning environment and a broad and enriched curriculum for all the children.

Since taking on the role of Foundation Governor, I try to be as actively involved in school life as possible, through attending Mass, or attending school events where children share their learning. I am very proud to observe the close links with the Parish of St. Philip Neri Church.

From starting in Foundation 1 to leaving in Year 6, the children’s achievements and attendance are celebrated. They are supported academically and spiritually, so that they can move into their next phase of education with confidence and many happy memories. From speaking to parents the children themselves, it is clear that each child is encouraged to develop and use personal talents and skills in areas of learning, sport and the creative arts, whilst also supporting others through their caring relationships.

My fellow Governors and I value the support given by our parents/carers. We thank those of you who send your child to our school and would encourage those who are thinking of choosing our school to come for a visit, where I guarantee you will receive a warm welcome.
